News Retail Real Estate : UK First Net Zero Carbon Shopping Centres: Quayside MediaCity and Gloucester Quays
Quayside MediaCity in Salford and Gloucester Quays have achieved a groundbreaking feat by becoming the UK's first shopping centres to attain 'Net Zero Carbon - Operational Energy' status, aligning with the UK Green Building Council's (UKGBC) Net Zero Carbon Buildings Framework.
These two shopping destinations have joined Peel L&P's growing portfolio of net zero carbon properties. This achievement follows the successful implementation of various net zero carbon initiatives across Peel L&P's estate. These initiatives encompassed significant upgrades to lighting systems in various spaces, including public areas, food courts, back offices, and advertising signage.
Jo Holden, Peel L&P's Sustainability and ESG Director, expressed the significance of this milestone, stating, "This is a significant achievement. Becoming net zero carbon in two major retail destinations sets a precedent in the UK and underscores our commitment to reducing carbon emissions throughout our portfolio."
She further added, "The journey towards net zero carbon status has galvanized our energy team and all members of our organization to explore ways to reduce energy consumption while embracing renewable sources. The positive impact on our carbon emissions has been extensive, thanks to the dedicated efforts of our team. However, our ambition is to build on this success and enhance the resilience of our properties to climate change. We are particularly proud of the verification of eighteen buildings, including these two key retail centres, by the end of 2022."
Peel L&P's ongoing efforts to curtail carbon emissions align with its five-year sustainability plan, which supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
